Garments are measured in inches with shirt laying flat

Pit to pit; measuring starting from left under arm pit to the right arm pit 

Length; measuring highest point of the tee at the top of neck, to the bottom hem of the tee laid

Although most garments are measured accurately, please keep in mind, some garments have stretch, give or more drape than others. A 0.5 (+/-) inch margin of area that may differ is expected.
